Ghost of His Former Self: The Decline of LT2

Way back in March I wrote an article forewarning about the decline of LaDainian Tomlinson and urged all of the keeper and dynasty owners to trade him while you could:

Then just over two months later in June, I made the case not to select LT2 as your number one overall pick in your fantasy drafts, eloquently comparing him to Marshall Faulk and drawing numerous comparisons which shouldn't have been ignored.

It's only been two weeks, but my friends, the decline is upon us. Tomlinson has 31 carries on the season for only 123 yards, but even more troublesome is he has only recorded 5 receptions. Those numbers are only good enough to be a RB35 in a standard league. That's lower than Warrick Dunn, Sammy Morris and Chris Perry. LT2's backup, Darren Sproles, received 9 total touches in three quarters of action last week and is now twelve spots higher in the RB rankings.

For the defenders out there, I can agree that you shouldn't start panicking to the point of trading Tomlinson for any of the above mentioned players. There's still a good chance he can save his season and yours. But the names I will list below are players I wouldn't even consider trading straight up to a desperate LT owner. These are players I predict will finish with more fantasy points than Tomlinson will score by seasons end. This will be a weekly feature, and I suspect this list will only grow as the season wears on.

Brian Westbrook, Eagles
Marion Barber, Cowboys
Adrian Peterson, Vikings
Frank Gore, 49ers
Willie Parker, Steelers
Marshawn Lynch, Bills
Clinton Portis, Redskins
Jonathan Stewart, Panthers
Chris Johnson, Titans
