Short Cuts: A Quick Look at This Week's Cuts

Big names were released this week as the first wave of NFL cuts were posted by the Falcons, Bills, Panthers and Dolphins. Let's take a look at these players and breakdown their options for 2008.

Atlanta Falcons
Alge Crumpler, TE - Crump's release puts him at the top of the available tight ends and he'll have no shortage of suitors.   He seems to have already drawn interest from Carolina and like most other cut Falcons, could be headed to Seattle where Jim Mora is an assistant.  Other possible destinations include the Jets, Saints, Bills or Bucs.

Byron Leftwich, QB- After abruptly being dumped by the Jags prior to the season, Leftwich chose to sign with a team that could best give him a shot to start.  Unfortunately the Falcons were that team and more harm than good was done to Leftwich's stock.  Now he must find a team willing to take him on as a backup, or more importantly he must accept the fact that he's no longer a starter in this league.  Possible destinations: Ravens, Vikings, Raiders

Wayne Gandy, OT- The best years of the 37 year old are definitely behind him, and after tearing his ACL in 2007, all signs point to retirement

Rod Coleman, DT- Coleman has seen better days, but at 31 he still has something left in the tank and will easily find work this season for a team looking to add depth on the interior defensive line.  Expect a visit to Seattle and any other 4-3 base defensive team.

Buffalo Bills
Peerless Price, WR- If not for Marv Levy, Peerless could have very well been out of the league last year.  Turning 29, Price has lost his most valuable asset: his speed and now faces a season coming off neck surgery.

Carolina Panthers
Dan Morgan, LB- Morgan once dominated the middle of the Panthers defense, but due to concussions and various other injuries, he hasn't played much since 2005.  He'll probably latch on to a team for training camp and if he makes a team he will probably find it difficult to remain on the active roster.

Miami Dolphins
Zach Thomas, LB- Zach's 2007 started off with two great games, but his career was in jeopardy after he couldn't kick the concussions.  At 35, he'll play with his head more than his body, but his head is what's questionable.  The Saints are in early contact and Thomas has proclaimed to be ready to sign with any playoff contender.

Trent Green, QB- Parcells reiterated that bringing back Green would be a possibility but Green's value would be strictly as a mentor and a backup for any team in 2008.

Keith Traylor, DT- At 38, Traylor's days are just about up.

Marty Booker, WR- Booker has openly pined a return to Chicago but nothing has come out of it as yet.  After 6 TD's in 2006, Booker was most likely a victim of the quarterback roulette in Miami last season.  He'll still figure to be an affordable slot receiver and an added veteran presence to any receiving core.  Possible destinations: Niners, Rams, and Titans
